Description

After "Triple Thread" with Thorax, Ember and Spike, the changeling leader became my new favorite character
So it was only a matter of time when will I draw him again. Well, I didn't have to wait very long; turned out that two episodes later he was once again featured! And this time with his brother, Pharynx! Was it just me or Pharynx was one of the best written MLP characters since I don't know when? He had his motives and these were a solid motives; he cared so much for his Hive but poor guy just couldn't get with the times, believing that once fully reformed, the Changelings won't be able to protect themselves. And, surprisingly, he was right! It was great to have a character who was acting out of norm but was proven right in the end. We need more of that :'D

I also fucked up with uploading since I got this episode mixed with "Daring Done?" and didn't want to spoil Pharynx's reformation. Turned out that it was "Daring Done?" that got leaked, not "To Change a Changeling", so yeah, my bad, should have posted it sooner "^^

I really like this image very much!
It may have drawn inspiration from the glass window images we have seen in pony contexts throughout MLP without imitating the glass window optic (which would have looked like it was done by ponies rather than being of changeling origin since we have never seen glass being used for art or architecture by changelings).
I really like the paralells between Thorax and Pharynx on the one and Celestia and Luna on the other side. This possible paralell seems well reflected in the composition of this image, expecially when taking a look at the expressions of Thorax and Pharynx. Thorax's face is one of absolute peace of mind and spirit and full confidence in his brother.
Pharynx smile on the other hand still bears an aggressiveness befitting his character very well. It remains yet to be seen in the series if that smile reflects just the boldness of a proud protector of the new swarm or if it might forebode a relapse into the old ways, possibly nourished by Chrysalis and by the possible resentment of being the lesser of the two brothers in the perception of their people (again a possible paralell to the Celestia / Luna story).
Light and Shadow effects have been used very well in this image with the light source erradiating from the center of the image. The small light spots on the faces of both brothers fit nicely to make their heads appear more plastic.
I really like the composition of the background. We have green as a dominant color (which seems to have been the main replaced the old black) and the leafbearing vines which fit nicely to the return of plants to the barren land which we saw in the episode. The centerpiece of the background is one of the gems we see on Thorax's neck which is surrounded by four gems looking like those from Pharynx's neck. This could be interpreted either positively as Pharynx's gems protecting / shielding Thorax's on all sides (the interpretation I prefer, especially with the pointy ends of the gems turned outwards) or negatively as Thorax's gem being surrounded / besieged by his brother's gems. I like the ambiguity and room for various interpretations this image offers.
Much as I would like to spot and point out any technical flaws or something where I could offer concrete constructive criticism for possible improvement, there isn't much that I can find. I think in the series Thorax's and Pharynx's wings got four rather than three bows. You also gave them a bit more biceps than we see in the series, but both of these points are matters of style rather than actual points of criticism.
I am looking forward to see more from you, Missy Dakota <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/>
